Wedding Cake Serving Chart: What Size Cake Do You Need?

Choosing the right cake size is one of the most common questions couples ask when planning their wedding.
It seems simple at first, but once you start factoring in guest numbers, serving styles and whether you are offering additional desserts, it can quickly become unclear how much cake you actually need.
This guide breaks it down in a clear and practical way so you can feel confident in your decision.

What is a standard cake serving size?

At Spodeli, cakes are designed using a standard 1" x 2" dessert portion.
This allows for clean, consistent servings that are generous enough for guests, without being oversized or wasteful.
Using a consistent portion size also makes it much easier to accurately plan your cake based on your guest count.

How I work out cake size

When it comes to sizing, I don’t work off generic charts or guesswork.

I base each cake on a standard dessert portion, then scale it to suit your guest count, how the cake is being served, and whether you are offering other desserts on the day.

Most weddings tend to fall into a few common size ranges, and from there I guide you toward the right fit so you are not over-ordering, but also not left short.

When you can scale it back

Not every guest will necessarily have a full serving of cake, especially if there are other elements offered on the day.

If you are including a dessert table, serving the cake later in the evening, or planning a more substantial meal beforehand, the cake often becomes more of a moment rather than the main dessert.

In those cases, I will usually guide you toward a slightly smaller size so it feels appropriate without excess.

When you may want a little more

If the cake is your main dessert, or you would like it to feel more generous, I will usually suggest allowing a little extra.

This might be the case if you are not offering other sweets, or if you would like guests to have the option to go back for more.

It also works beautifully if you are a real “cake family” and like the idea of guests taking a slice home, like the little paper sleeves you used to see years ago. I also offer these as an optional detail if you would like to include them.

Tiered cake vs kitchen cake

For larger weddings, many couples choose a smaller tiered cake for display and cutting, with additional cake prepared behind the scenes.

This allows you to keep the cake on display more considered in size, while still serving all of your guests.
